The Carmo Family

Gainesville, FL - At least a dozen cars, six tractor-trailers and a motorhome collided at about 3:45 a.m. Sunday. Some cars were crushed under the bellies of big rigs. Others burst into flames and sent metal shrapnel flying through the air.

Early morning fog and smoke from a 62 acre brush fire caused poor visibility on I-75 that contributed to this chain reaction accident.

Late Monday, the highway patrol said seven people died and at least 16 people were injured after 10 vehicles crashed in the northbound lanes of the highway, the first of two multiple-vehicle pile-ups along I-75.

The vehicles crashed about 4 a.m. after driving in heavy smoke that made it hard to see. Jason Lee Raikes, 26, of Richmond, Va., died in the crash, authorities said.

They also said five out of six people riding in a 2012 Dodge Caravan died in the crash: Driver Edson Carmo, 38; Roselia DeSilva, 41; Jose Carmo Jr., 43; Adrianna Carmo, 39; and Leticia Carmo, 17; all of Kennesaw, Ga. The seventh victim was identified Tuesday as 27-year-old Christie Diana Nguyen, a Gainseville woman who was a passenger in one of the cars involved.

Lord, we pray for all those who died, especially the Carmo family members and all those who were injuried in this terrible accident. May God's healing hand be upon them.

Rev. Dr. Olav Fykse Tveit

World Council of Churches 2012 - The General Secretary of the World Council of Churches,(WCC) Rev. Dr. Olav Fykse Tveit invites all peoples and religions to join in the collaborative effort to explore the theme "God of Life." This is the first part of the theme for the Assembly of the WCC in 2012. This ecumenical movement is in a special way shaped by faith in God, the creator--God of life.

WCC is a worldwide fellowship of 349 Churches seeking unity, a common witness and Christian service. Rev. Tveit shares: "Therefore, it is a special gift to us from God that we can start this year by listening to the words of creation, the words about creation, the creative words.

God is creating life by creating light, and by bringing order - separating light from darkness, day from night.

God wills life and order, by creating life, new life, every day, every year.

God is inviting you and me to be part of this movement of creation, of the new creation, every day, every year. ..."

Lord, bless the work of all those who have participated in the Week of Prayer for Chrisitan Unity. Bless the efforts of the World Council of Churches and related Pastoral commissions for unity and peace of the Roman and Orthodox Churches as they begin a new year of dialogue and prayer.

Lord, may we be one in You as You are one in us. May all life be reverenced as your gift, sacred and holy from conception to natural death. May your love be our source of unity and peace until we are all one. God of Life be our peace.

Deputy William Coleman, Age 50

Phoenix, AZ - Deputy William Coleman, a 20-year veteran of the Sheriff's Office who would have turned 51 next week, was killed in a shootout last weekend with a former Marine reservist whom he was trying to question in connection with a burglary alarm in Anthem.

When Coleman tapped on the window of a van in which Drew Ryan Maras, 30, was laying, Maras came out from under a blanket shooting. After fatally wounding Coleman, Maras himself was killed by other officiers at the scene.

Eulogies were delivered by fellow officiers Coleman's sister, brother, son and co-workers. Maricopa County Sheriff Joe Arpaio also thanked Coleman directly in brief remarks.

Lord, eternal rest grant unto William and may your perpetual light shine on all public servants who risk their lives for us daily.
