Glenn Thervil, Age 30, Deerfield Beach, FL

DEERFIELD BEACH, Florida - Authorities say a South Florida man was shot to death when a fight broke out after he tried to borrow a cigarette from another man.

The Broward Sheriff's Office says 30-year-old Glenn Thervil asked for a cigarette from 25-year-old Roderick Ferguson while the two were hanging out at a Deerfield Beach Park.

When Ferguson refused, authorities say Thervil pulled a 32-caliber handgun. Others in the group urged Thervil to leave the park, but he returned later.

Deputies say a fight broke out. Ferguson shot Thervil, then fled with the other men.

Authorities tracked Ferguson to a nearby home, where he surrendered to a SWAT team.

Ferguson has been charged with first-degree murder. He is being held in the Broward County Jail.

Lord, we pray for eternal life for all youth who will die today from a lack of wisdom and exposure to violent behavior. May all mankind come to love their enemies and to do good to their persecutors. Lord, let there be peace and forgiveness where death and destruction prevail. We ask this in the name of the Father, Son and Holy Spirit. Amen

Fortnight for Freedom Prayers

The Fortnight for Freedom

Please join us as we pray for the protection of religious freedom for all people and nations as an inherent God given right. Implied in this freedom is a deep respect and reverence for all life and the freedom of each person to live by his informed conscience and free will. Let us also celebrate the gifts we have been given and thank God for the precious right to know, love and serve Him expressed in and through our religious freedom.

Prayer for the Protection of Religious Liberty recommended by The United States Conference of Catholic Bishops to be prayed as part of the Fortnight for Freedom from June 21 - July 4:

O God our Creator,

Through the power and working of your Holy Spirit, you call us to live out our faith in the midst of the world, bringing the light and the saving truth of the Gospel to every corner of society.

We ask you to bless us in our vigilance for the gift of religious liberty. Give us the strength of mind and heart to readily defend our freedoms when they are threatened; give us courage in making our voices heard on behalf of the rights of your Church and the freedom of conscience of all people of faith.

Grant, we pray, O heavenly Father, a clear and united voice to all your sons and daughters
gathered in your Church in this decisive hour in the history of our nation, so that, with every trial withstood and every danger overcome for the sake of our children, our grandchildren, and all who come after us
this great land will always be "one nation, under God, indivisible, with liberty and justice for all."

We ask this through Christ our Lord.

Amen.

Bishop Antoine Audo SJ and Christians in Homs, Syria

Homs, Syria - Almost the entire Christian population of the Syrian city of Homs has fled violence and persecution and a leading Catholic charity is providing emergency aid to help them.

The mass exodus of 50,000 or more people to villages and towns around the city comes amid reports that the homes of Christians in Homs have been attacked and seized by fanatics.

Catholic charity Aid to the Church in Need, which is today (Monday) announcing an urgent 80,000 aid package providing food and shelter, has been told that 90 percent of Christians have left Homs.

The exodus, mostly taking place within the past six weeks, is part of what respected news sources describe as an ongoing ethnic cleansing of Christians by militant Islamic groups with links to Al Qaeda.

Syrias largest Christian populations, and Church sources have said the faithful have borne the brunt of the violence, escaping to villages many of them in mountains 30 miles outside the city.

Islamists have reportedly gone from house to house in the Homs neighbourhoods of Hamidiya and Bustan al-Diwan, forcing Christians to leave without giving them a chance to take their belongings.

According to other reports, Christians have left their homes voluntarily, in effect making way for others to occupy them for shelter from the violence.

Desperate for food and shelter, the displaced people taking sanctuary in the Wadi Alnasara region and Marmarita and other villages, are to receive aid as part of the 80,000 ACN aid programme.

The assistance will provide each family with US$60 each month for basic food and lodging, with the hope that by the summer they can return home.

Overseeing the aid programme, Bishop Antoine Audo SJ of Aleppo told Aid to the Church in Need: The people we are helping are very afraid....The Christians dont know what their future will hold. They are afraid they will not get their homes back.

It is very important that we do whatever we can to help the people.

Lord, we pray for all the dead and all Chrisitians who have been persecuted and terrorized in Homs, Syria. Bless the efforts of "The Church in Need" and other relief agencies during this critical time.

We pray also for terrorist and violators of human rights every where. We pray for their conversion and deliverance from all evil. Lord, conquer evil with good and inspire new life and spiritual conversion in the hearts of all who abuse or seek the destruction of human life. Amen

Rabbi Yosef Shalom Elyashiv, Age 102, Jerusalem

JERUSALEM - Paramount Lithuanian-Haredi leader Rabbi Yosef Shalom Elyashiv, 102, is in "very serious" medical condition. Doctors at Shaarei Tzedek Hospital were attempting to stabilize his condition Tuesday morning.

Rabbi Elyashiv has been in the hospital since February, when he suffered from pneumonia and other maladies. On Tuesday morning, a "virulent infection" was found in his blood.

The family members of Rabbi Elyashiv have been called to his bedside and they have asked the public to pray for his health.

Shlomo Kook, the spokesman for the family of Rabbi Elyashiv, told IDF Radio: "The Rabbi's situation is critical. The entire nation has been moving between despair and hope. People got up and started to pray in the middle of the night in many places across the world."

Rabbi Elyashiv is often referred to as the Posek HaDor, the leading authority on halakha in this generation.

Lord, continue to bless Rabbi Yosef Elyashiv and his many contributions to his country, his people and his religion. May his presence today and for all eternity continue to bring you honor, glory and thanksgiving.

Lord, we thank you for all religious leaders all over the world, who are your instruments of peace, wisdom and truth. Continue to bless them with a long life and inspire them to live holy lives according to your perfect will and divine destiny. Amen

Mercy Corp Children 2012

North Hwanghae, North Korea - Malnourished children line the floor of a pediatric ward of Rinsan County Hospital in flood-affected North Hwanghae province in North Korea.

North Korea is approaching another severe food crisis, according to international relief groups who are calling on the U.S. and other governments to join South Korea in increasing aid to the reclusive communist nation.

Floods and a brutal winter have cut into crop production and -- combined with rising global food prices -- have created severe food shortages throughout the country. Aid groups are increasingly concerned about the health effects on North Koreans, especially the country's children.

"North Korea is approaching a catastrophic situation for vulnerable populations including children, the elderly, and pregnant women," according to David Austin, North Korea Program Director for Mercy Corps, an international aid organization based in Portland, Ore.

North Korea has experienced food shortages for decades. In what was considered to be one of the worst famines of the 20th century, an estimated million people starved to death in the 1990s, though official figures are unavailable and some counts put the toll much higher. Austin said that the current situation, while not as dire yet, is extremely urgent. "When you add these shocks -- the floods and an especially cold winter -- to an existing weakened system, the population is going to get hit much harder," said Austin. "That's why this year is worse than previous years."

Lord, we pray for all starving children, especially those in North Korean, Niger and the Sudan. Please bless the Relief Agencies who assist them, such as Mercy Corp, with the resources they need to save lives. We beg on behalf of the welfare of all children whose right to life has been compromised by natural disasters, oppressive government policies and abuse world wide. Lord, help all mankind to value human life as sacred and all children as precious in your eyes. Amen

Lana Hollingsworth, Pinetop, AZ

Pinetop, AZ A bear attacked and injured a 74-year-old Arizona woman camping east of Payson in northern Arizona on Thursday.

The Apache Junction woman had minor bruises and a cut to her face after the black bear ripped a hole in the tent where she, her husband and dog were sleeping at a campground in the Tonto National Forest, reported Jim Paxon, a spokesman with the Arizona Game and Fish Department. The couple was able to scare off the large adult bear by making a lot of commotion.

"They are very, very lucky," Paxon said. "Anytime a bear rips through a tent and enters it with humans in it, that's a pretty big threat." The woman was treated at Payson Regional Medical Center. The couple's names were not released, and Paxon said they did not want to speak to reporters Thursday.

Paxon said the woman and her husband are avid campers and did everything right, including locking up all their food and cookware in the cab of their pickup truck and not having any food in the tent.

He cited the long-term Arizona drought as a possible reason for the attack, adding there is "not much for these bears to eat so they're looking for a meal, and that's what this bear was doing."

The campground was evacuated after the attack and now will be closed until Aug. 31 as a precaution.

Only seven bear attacks have been documented in Arizona since 1990, including Thursday's, according to Game and Fish.

Last year on June 28, 61-year-old Lana Hollingsworth died after being attacked by a black bear while walking her dog outside her vacation home in Pinetop in eastern Arizona.

Lord, we pray for eternal rest for Lana, who died last year and for a full recovery for the unknown 74 year old woman recently attacked by a bear in the Tonto National Forest.

Lord, protect us from unknown dangers physically and spiritually. By your grace triumph over spiritual and physical circumstances that threaten us each day. May your divine protection be with us always and may the souls of the faithfully departed through your mercy rest in peace. Amen
