Bishop Macram Max Gassis' Urgent Appeal

Comboni Mission, Sudan - Bishop Macram Gassis is traveling the world inviting all countries and religions to support the Sudanese people to avert a humanitarian tragedy without precedent. Bishop Gassis is imploring all governments to seek peace and stability in the Sudan so that humanitarian efforts can be resumed.

The book of Micah reminds us: "You have been told, O man, what is good and what the Lord requires of you: 'Only to do the right and love goodness and to walk humbly with your God.'" Micah 6:8

Lord, touch the hearts of all peoples to seek goodness by helping the people of Sudan during this grave time of famine and political oppression. Send the resources they need so peace and basic human rights may be restored in their country. Protect the women and children, who are homeless and starving, from further political oppression and endangerment.

Bless all humanitarian efforts so effective solutions may be found to help the millions who are facing death. May your mercy triumph over greed, misuse of political power and blatant disregard of human life.

Lord, hear the cry of the poor...

Freedom and Deliverance of the Syrian People

Syria - Crimes against humanity perpetrated by Syrian government in 2011 and 2012 remind us of historic abuses of human freedom and crimines against humanity. Syrian government has used excessive force against protestors and families living in distressed humanitarian conditions.

The Syrian governments violent response to protests since mid-March has left over 5,400 people dead as of 10 January 2012, including at least 300 children, according to the UN Office of the High Commissioner for Human Rights (OHCHR). Thousands more have been wounded, arbitrarily arrested, tortured and disappeared as protestors and their families within and outside of Syria have been targeted. Under-Secretary-General B. Lynn Pascoe informed Security Council members on 27 April 2011 that sources in Syria were consistently reporting the use of artillery fire against unarmed civilians; door-to-door arrest campaigns; the shooting of medical personnel who attempt to aid the wounded; raids against hospitals, clinics and mosques and the purposeful destruction of medical supplies and arrest of medical personnel.

Over ten thousand refugees fled the country since March, many to Lebanon and Turkey, as noted in the Office of the High Commissioner for Human Rights Commission of Inquirys report to the General Assembly published on 23 November 2011. Amnesty International stated in its 24 October report that wounded civilians seeking medical treatment in at least four hospitals faced torture and other forms of ill-treatment from security officials and medical staff.

Additionally, medical professionals attempting to help the wounded engaged in protests were threatened with arrest and torture. Human Rights Watch (HRW) reported as early as June that the attacks by the government reached the level of crimes against humanity in multiple cities across Syria, such as Daraa and Homs.

Later on 15 December HRW named over 70 Syrian commanders who imposed a shoot to kill policy against protestors, making clear that these crimes were knowingly committed against the civilian population.

In January 2012, violence in Syria escalated as evidenced by reports of a massacre in the district of Karm al-Zeitoun on 26 January which resulted in the death of more than 74 Syrian citizens over two days. Further reports were released by HRW on 3 February stating that authorities had detained and tortured children with impunity.

Lord, by your cross and resurrection you have triumphed over man's inhumanity to man. Set the people of Syria free from all oppression and abuse and let your Holy Spirit convert hearts and restore governments that will champion the rights of all women and children and all men to the basic freedoms of health and well-being; protection of life and the pursuit of happiness as God intented.

Lord, visit your justice on those who oppress the widow, orphan and the neglected. Protect the life and freedom of the people of Syria and all nations who desire life and the pursuit of happiness under God with religious freedom for all. For those who do not respect life reign down your justice and spirit so they might be converted and chastised according to your perfect will. May your mercy reign forever until all nations are converted to your way, your truth and your life. Amen

Our Nation's Intentions July 4th 2012

Washington, DC - Let us remember our many blessings and all those who have served our country to defend our freedoms over the years as we celebrate the anniversary of the founding of our great Nation. Let us ask for continued wisdom and grace on all our endeavors so that they may be in keeping with the Lord's will for us as individuals and as a Nation.

On July 4th, 1861 Rev. Byron Sunderland, D.D. offered the following prayer in the Senate:

"Almighty and everlasting God, be not angry with us for our sins, which we only confess and deplore; but pardon our offenses and extend to us Thy favor. We thank Thee for Thy goodness on this anniversary of the nation a day tenfold more precious by reason of our present troubles, and sacred to the heart for the ever memorable Declaration of our fathers, in which Thou didst begin more openly to give us a name among the nations of the earth. We thank Thee for all Thy manifold and abundant mercies hitherto to make our nation exceedingly great and glorious; but now disasters have befallen us and darkness broods in the land. And now we ask Thy mercy as the Senate is convening at a most momentous crisis of our history. Give to Thy servants all needed help. Add to their deliberations wisdom and unanimity, and profit and speed to their conclusion. Bless Thy servant, the President of the United States, our veteran Commander-in- Chief, and all that have functions in the civil and military power. May the angel of Thy presence walk in the Cabinet and in the Congress and in the camp, to go before, to purify, and to direct the now greatly and universally-awakened love of country. And we beseech Thee to guide us, to overrule and order all things, and so to cause that nothing shall fail, that the disorders of the land may be speedily healed, that peace and concord may prevail, that truth and righteousness may be established, and that Thy Church and Kingdom may flourish in a larger peace and prosperity, for Thy Son, our Saviour, Jesus Christ's sake. Amen." (Source: Congressional Globe, 37th Congress, first session, new series, 1, 4 July 1861.)
