Protection of Human Rights

UNITED NATIONS U.N. Secretary-General Ban Ki-moon says that 20 years after the Rwanda genocide, the international community's failure to prevent atrocities in Syria is "a shameful indictment."

The U.N. chief also pointed to "grave and blatant" human rights violations in the Central African Republic, civilians threatened in many regions, and worrying trends such as rising bias against migrants, Muslims, Roma and other minorities in Europe and elsewhere.

Ban spoke at Thursday's New York launch of "Kwibuka 20", a series of events to mark the 20th anniversary of the Rwanda genocide which began hours after a plane carrying the president was mysteriously shot down as it approached the capital, Kigali, on April 6, 1994.

The secretary-general called the genocide "an epic failure" of the international community and said lessons learned must be implemented.

Lord, grant us the wisdom and social consciousness to pray and act upon all human rights atrocities, especially in Syria for whatever happens to the poor, the marginalized and the victimized happens to all of us.

Our Father ... Hail Mary ... Oh my God we are heartily sorry for having offended thee ... Amen

Archbishop Nicholas Chia of Sinapore

Singapore - Archbishop Emeritus Nicholas Chia, who fell into a coma last Tuesday, is still in critical condition.

The 75-year-old former head of the Roman Catholic Church here suffered a brain hemorrhage following a fall in Punggol Park, near the Catholic Spirituality Centre where he lives.

In an update, the Catholic Church said that due to the extent of his injury, doctors at Mount Alvernia Hospital, where he is being cared for in a private ward, are still working to clear a large blood clot in his brain. The good news is that bleeding in his brain has stopped, the Church said.

"Given his present condition and the fear of infection, no visitors will be allowed for the time being. We request that you continue to pray for His Grace's speedy recovery," the Church added.

Lord, as we pray for a good and holy Lent and a reverent Ash Wednesday, help those in most need of your mercy. Bless us with a growing awareness of the grace of living in your Divine presence in this life unto eternity. May your perfect will be done and may our lives give you honor, glory and praise now and forever. Amen

UN Intervention in North Korea 2014

United Nations, New York - A year-long investigation by the United Nations is set to conclude that North Korea has committed crimes against humanity, according to a leaked outline of the report, in the most authoritative indictment to date of abuses carried out by Pyongyangs leaders.

The UN panel will also recommend that the Norths crimes be referred to the International Criminal Court in The Hague, according to the Associated Press, which obtained the outline of the findings. The report of the three-member Commission of Inquiry will be released Monday.

In establishing the panel, the UN has sought to address the challenge of a nation where abuses are carried out by an entrenched family-run government that faces almost no threat of international intervention.

Activists and human rights lawyers say the report, at minimum, will lead to broader global awareness of the Norths city-size gulags and systematic abductions of foreigners. But they also say that the Norths traditional ally, China, a permanent member of the U.N. Security Council, could block any referral of findings to The Hague.

"It is exciting but also risky that the Commission appears to have requested the Security Council refer the situation in (North Korea) to the International Criminal Court," Jared Genser, an international human rights lawyer and an expert on North Korean abuses, said in an email. "There is no doubt that legally such a referral would be highly justified and appropriate. But it is also bound to infuriate China."

The ICC defines crimes against humanity as any widespread or systematic attack using extermination, torture or rape, for instance carried out against civilians.

Lord, stop all abuses against human rights and basic exploitation of human dignity in North Korea and in all countries denying basic freedoms to their people. Turn your merciful gaze on all those who are suffering this day from tyranny and exploitation. Raise up social consciousness and political intervention against such atrocities so that all people may live in freedom and your good will. We ask this in Jesus' name through the intercession of our Lady of Perpetual Help. Amen
