The 52-year-old man, whose name was not released by authorities, was struck about 11:45 p.m. Wednesday in front of a liquor store on Chandler St.

11 Wesleyan Students Hospitalized

Middletown, Connecticut - Wesleyan University says at least 11 students have been hospitalized with symptoms of overdoses on the drug known as "Molly."

Dean Michael Whaley, Vice President of Student Affairs, said in a letter to the campus that one of the students, a sophomore, was in critical condition at Middlesex Hospital on Sunday. That evening, Middlesex police said two patients at Hartford Hospital had been elevated to critical condition, and two were in serious condition.

The university says it's aware of 11 students being treated for overdose symptoms consistent with the use of Molly, a stimulant psychoactive drug also known as methylone. No other information about their conditions was released.

Whaley said university police and residence officials are investigating, along with Middlesex police. He asked students to check on their friends.

Lord, please protect all college age students. Guide them with your wisdom and grace that they may make wise life-giving choices during this formative phase of their lives. Help them to come to know you more and more each day and live by Gospel values which will guide them toward eternal life.

Lord, assist them with your divine protection, intervention and deliverance from all that would harm them, especially any addictions and life threatening habits which would shorten their lives. We ask this through the intercession of Saint Benedict and Saint Scholastica and all the saints. Amen

Lenten Blessings

Lent 2015 - May you and those you serve be blessed on your Lenten journey. May our Lord grant you the grace to live out this holy season calling to mind the corporal and spiritual works of Mercy.

The corporal works of mercy are the seven practices of charity, based on Christs prediction of the last judgment (Matthew 25:41. They are: to feed the hungry, to give drink to the thirsty, to clothe the naked, to support the homeless, to visit the sick, to ransom the captive, and to bury the dead. First and foremost, they recognize the sacredness of human life. By fulfilling these works of mercy we are reminded that we are our brothers keeper. It is our duty and our obligation to love our neighbor through acts of charity and kindness. When we see a need in our neighbor, we are to strive to fill it.

The spiritual works of mercy recognize sin, ignorance, doubt, sorrow and other human conditions that keep us from fully loving and serving God. When we recognize these conditions in others we are called to reach out in faith and in love so that we might draw them closer to Christ. The spiritual works of mercy are the traditional seven forms of Christian charity which strive to preserve the soul of our neighbor. The spiritual works of mercy are: to instruct the ignorant, to counsel the doubtful, to admonish sinners, to bear wrongs patiently, to forgive offenses willingly, to comfort the afflicted, and to pray for the living and the dead. The spiritual works of mercy are based on the teachings and practices of the Church since apostolic times.

It is our lifelong duty to work to fulfill the works of mercy as our way of living out the teachings of Jesus. As Matthew 25:32-46 reminds us, when we feed the hungry, give drink to the thirsty, welcome the stranger, clothe the naked, take care of the sick, and visit the imprisoned, we care for Christ himself.

"Lord, for the sake of your sorrowful Passion have mercy on us and on the whole world. Amen" (refrain from the Divine Mercy Chaplet.)

21 Coptic Christians Killed in Libya

VATICAN CITY - Pope Francis expressed deep sadness at the beheading of 21 Egyptian Coptic Christians in Libya, departing from the script of an address on Monday to emphasize the unity of all Christians regardless of the denomination they follow.

Addressing members of the Church of Scotland, the Pope Francis mentioned the killings which took place on a beach in Libya and were filmed and broadcast on Sunday by a website that supports Islamic State militants.

"Their only words were: 'Jesus, help me!' They were killed simply for the fact that they were Christians," Pope Francis said in his native Spanish, departing from the Italian he uses at most formal events.

The leader of the world's 1.2 billion Catholics, who has said it is "lawful" to stop an unjust aggressor, went on:

"The blood of our Christian brothers and sisters is a testimony which cries out to be heard. It makes no difference whether they be Catholics, Orthodox, Coptics or Protestants. They are Christians!"

Francis added: "The martyrs belong to all Christians."

Later on Monday, the Vatican's spokesman said that Pope Francis had telephoned the Coptic Pope, Tawadros II, to say he was sharing the pain caused by the "barbaric murder of Coptic Christian by Islamic fundamentalists".

Egypt, where Christians make up around a tenth of a predominantly Muslim population, is stepping up its battle against Islamist militants in neighboring Libya.

The Coptic Church is founded on the teachings of St. Mark, who took Christianity to Egypt in the first century during the reign of the Roman emperor Nero, according to tradition.

Let us unite in prayer with all Christians everywhere over the loss of these innocent lives and all those martyred for their faith. Let us also pray for the conversion of all terrorist throughout the world so that there may be peace and respect for all life everywhere. Amen

"Oh God, come to our assistance. Oh Lord, make haste to help us." - Opening Morning Prayer Antiphon

Sarah Drewer, Age 33, Scottsdale, AZ

SCOTTSDALE, AZ - Friends and family continue to grieve the loss of 33-year-old Sarah Drewer. The mother of two was shot and killed in front of her home Tuesday morning in Scottsdale. Police say her husband, 46-year-old Doug Drewer, pulled the trigger.

The young mother had her whole life ahead of her. It was a life her friends say she was finally excited to start living, until it came to a painful ending. On a peaceful Scottsdale street sits a tiny memorial of flowers and candles for a woman whose friends say made a big impact.

"Sarah loved everyone," explains Jill Bauman, Sarah Drewer's close friend and personal trainer. "She had a sense of humor like you can't imagine. She was the funniest friend I've ever had. She brought joy into my life every single day and everyone who knew Sarah, she made them smile." But behind her smile, friends like Jill say Sarah hid her pain to conceal what was happening behind closed doors.

"Sarah was very silent about the violence in her home. You could see it in her eyes." It all came to the forefront Tuesday morning.

Police say Sarah's husband Doug shot and killed her in front of their home on 68th Street and Chaparral in Scottsdale. He then turned the gun on himself - all as the couple's young son watched. "Doug knew that Sarah was planning to leave and I think things just escalated to the point where he lost it. He made a really bad move," said Jill.

In 2009, Sarah filed an order of protection against her husband, less than a year after tying the knot. She said he had hit her and she was afraid for her safety as well as the safety of her two children. Just last Friday, police were at the couple's home again, serving another order of protection and removing several weapons.

Since that incident, Jill says her friend and workout buddy wasn't the same. "Especially since the order of protection in the last few days, Sarah was fearful for her life." It's a life Jill says was cut tragically short.

A loving mother, skilled nurse, and workout fanatic, Jill says Sarah lived her life to the max and was looking forward to starting a brand new chapter. "Sarah was an angel on earth and she's going to be forever missed and the world lost a beautiful human being yesterday."

Sarah's friends are planning to light candles in her honor in front of her home Wednesday night. They also say they want to make sure what happened Tuesday serves a purpose. On Valentine's Day, they will meet at Sarah's gym in Scottsdale to host a benefit. Proceeds from that will benefit her kids and will also go toward raising awareness for domestic violence.

Lord, we lift up all those suffering from domestic violence living and deceased. Send you Divine protection, intervention and deliverance to those in most need.

Lord, for the sake of your sorrowful Passion, have mercy on the Drewer family and on the whole world. - From the Chaplet of the Divine Mercy.
