Alice, Jerry and Isaac, Unemployed in California

LOS ANGELES, CA - Alice, Jerry and Isaac and their families are facing the financial crisis of their unemployment benefits running out. Over 2 million people face the loss of their financial assistance in a few weeks. We ask for your prayers that jobs would open up for them and that they would receive the assistance they need to provide for their families during this holiday season. Inspire all those with resources to share with a giving heart. Provide work and a means of income to those in need, especially the homeless, the sick and abandoned.

Lord, grant the unemployed your temporal and spiritual assistance. Through your divine providence and intervention deliver them from despair during this difficult time in their lives. Inspire others to come to their assistant and be merciful in this time of crisis.

As we count our blessings at this time of Thanksgiving, help us to be generous with all you have given us. Be merciful so we may be merciful to others. Turn our trials into opportunites. Strengthen our families, communities and nation and encourage us to be thankful, generous and good in all that we do.

Fr Werenfried Van Straaten and Sister Luiza Ciupa

Lviv - Ukrain - One of the most widely printed Bible-based texts has now been published in a special edition in Ukraine. It is a version of the renowned ACN Child's Bible "God speaks to His Children", this time illustrated with icons. This latest edition of a book which has now been printed in over 47 million copies worldwide was formally launched on 10 December in the Ukrainian City of Lviv.

The Child's Bible is an initiative of the International Catholic Pastoral Charity Aid to the Church in Need (ACN). The founder of the charity, Father Werenfried van Straaten, offered the first copies of the book to the General Assembly of the Latin American bishops in Puebla, Mexico in 1979, the year designated by the United Nations as the International Year of the Child. The charity ACN has also been intensively involved, ever since its foundation in 1947, in helping the Christians of Central and Eastern Europe. As part of this outreach, the Child's Bible has already been translated into a number of Eastern European languages. The new icons convey the Gospels beyond words and express the power of sacred art as a teaching tool.

Sister Luiza Ciupa understands the power of these painted images, which still captivate millions, far beyond the boundaries of their countries. It was she who asked ACN to undertake this special edition, since in her Ukrainian homeland "icons are the source of catechesis", as she herself puts it. Her mission is nothing less than the renewal of Ukraine through a renaissance of the Christian Faith.

Lord, helps us to reverence your sacred image in the hearts of our children and all humankind. Transform us through your Living Word and Mercy making us icons of your peace and love. By living the Gospel help us to illuminate the world one day at a time.
