Pope Benedict XVI and New Evangelization

Vatican City - Please join us as we meditate on our role and contribution to the New Evangelization inspired by Pope Benedict XVI's call to a personal encounter with God:

"Christianity is not a new philosophy or new morality. We are Christians only if we encounter Christ... Only in this personal relationship with Christ, only in this encounter with the Risen One do we really become Christians... Therefore, let us pray to the Lord to enlighten us, so that, in our world, he will grant us the encounter with his presence, and thus give us a lively faith, an open heart, and great charity for all, capable of renewing the world." - Sept. 3, 2008

"The Church is not an association that wishes to promote a certain cause. It is not about a cause. It is about the person of Jesus Christ." - July 1, 2008

"Many people perceive Christianity as something institutional -- rather than as an encounter with Christ -- which explains why they don't see it as a source of joy." - May 2004

"The essence of an ever-new encounter with... the God who speaks to us, who approaches us and who befriends us!"
- Pope Benedict XVI

"The evangelization of the person and of human communities depends totally on this encounter with Jesus Christ." - November 13, 2007

"Being Christian is not the result of an ethical choice or a lofty idea, but the encounter with an event, a person, which gives life a new horizon and a decisive direction.
- Pope Benedict XVI Deus Caritas Est (1) 2006

Lord, we ask for continued blessings on Pope Benedict XVI, and all those he serves. Renew our commitment to the New Evangelization as we encounter the Person of Christ in the sick, the poor, the dying and all those who are suffering in any way. May they encounter You in their homes, at work, and in their world. We also pray for all those who cause suffering that they may be converted by the Mercy of God and the love of their neighbor. Amen

Farah Vazehan and all Political Prisoners

Iran - Political prisoner Farah Vazehan is in poor physical condition. She was taken to the hospital Sunday after her condition deteriorated but was reportedly returned to prison because the head of the hospital refused to admit her due to a lack of beds.

Farah Vazehan who is suffering from various ailments was arrested during the Ashura protests in December 2009 and was sentenced to death by a Revolutionary Court. Her sentence was annulled after an appeal and her case was referred to the 28th branch of the Revolutionary Court headed by Judge Moqiseh where she was sentenced to 15 years of prison on charges of enmity with God.

Farah is suffering from heart ailments and needs special treatment in hospitals outside of prison. Despite promises made to her family, she has been denied a medical leave.

Lord, we lift up Farah Vazehan and all political prisoners, who suffer for their religious beliefs. May your mercy prevail over the injustices visited upon your people of all nations and religions. Touch the hearts of all government officials to foster the human rights and welfare of the people they serve. Grant them the wisdom and grace to respect all life, promote human dignity, religious tolerance and support human rights for all peoples in their care, especially political prisoners.

A Meditation for World Peace

Please join us as we pray for World Peace, especially in the Middle East, in all worn torn countries, in our nation, our homes and within our hearts.

"If we are peaceful, if we are happy, we can smile and blossom like a flower, and everyone in our family, our entire society, will benefit from our peace." - Thich Nhat Hanh

"I was once asked why I don't participate in anti-war demonstrations. I said that I will never do that, but as soon as you have a pro-peace rally, I'll be there." - Mother Teresa

"The first peace, which is the most important, is that which comes within the souls of people when they realize their relationship, their oneness with the universe and all its powers, and when they realize that at the center of the universe dwells the Great Spirit, and that this center is really everywhere, it is within each of us." - Black Elk

"Peace is not merely a distant goal that we seek, but a means by which we arrive at that goal." - Martin Luther King, Jr.

"We look forward to the time when the Power of Love will replace the Love of Power. Then will our world know the blessings of peace." - William Gladstone

"When my heart is at peace, the world is at peace." - Chinese Proverb

"If you yourself are at peace, then there is at least some peace in the world." - Thomas Merton

"If you scramble about in search of inner peace, you will lose your inner peace." - Lao Tzu

"It is no longer good enough to cry peace, we must act peace, live peace, and live in peace." - Shenandoah proverb

"If in our daily life we can smile, if we can be peaceful and happy, not only we, but everyone will profit from it. This is the most basic kind of peace work." - Thich Naht Hanh

If there is to be peace in the world,
There must be peace in the nations.
If there is to be peace in the nations,
There must be peace in the cities.
If there is to be peace in the cities,
There must be peace between neighbors.
If there is to be peace between neighbors,
There must be peace in the home.
If there is to be peace in the home,
There must be peace in the heart.

Father Paul OSB Saint Leo Abbey

Saint Leo, FL - We ask your prayers for Father Paul, a Benedictine Monk at Saint Leo Abbey, who has recently died after many years of service. May the Lord grant him and all those he served eternal rest and the heavenly blessing of living in the presence of God for all eternity.

Father Paul reverenced life and taught the importance of prayer and praise in the lives of the faithful. He embraced the Rule of Saint Benedict as his way of life and was an inspiration to his community as a Benedictine priest, retreat master, teacher, and living witness of the Gospel.

Lord, reward all your faithful servants who have recently died. Grant them and those they have served eternal life and your abundant mercy always. May your grace accomplish what human efforts cannot, until all rest in thee secure in your redeeming mercy and love.

"Great are you, O Lord, and exceedingly worthy of praise; your power is immense, and your wisdom beyond reckoning. And so we men, who are a due part of your creation, long to praise you we also carry our mortality about with us, carry the evidence of our sin and with it the proof that you thwart the proud. You arouse us so that praising you may bring us joy, because you have made us and drawn us to yourself, and our heart is unquiet until it rests in you." - Confessions of Saint Augustine Book 1, Chapter 1.

Michael Kudryk, Age 6, Freehold, NJ

NEW YORK - NY - Michael Kudyk, age 64 and a 40 year old woman, whose name was withheld by family, died after attempting the New York City Nautica Triathlon in 89 degree weather. 26 other contestants needed assistance. The deaths were the second and third ones at the popular triathlon in the last three years.

Race director Bill Burke called the deaths "a very, very sad occurrence and tragedy," but characterized the weather conditions during Sunday's race as optimal, with relatively mild temperatures and good cloud cover for much of the day. The temperature reached 89 degrees in Central Park on Sunday with high levels of humidity, according to the National Weather Service.

Participants in the yearly race swim about a mile, bike 25 miles and run 6 miles.

Lord, grant eternal rest to Michael's body and soul and all those who have died recently. We offer our prayer meditation on Saint Paul's letter to the Corinthians for them: "You know that while all the runners in the stadium take part in the race, the award goes to one man. In that case, run so as to win! Athletes deny themselves all sorts of things. They do this to win a crown of leaves that withers, but we a crown that is imperishable." 1 Cor 9:24-25

Lord, in your great mercy grant us the everlasting crown of forgiveness and eternal life. Inspire us to train for our eternal reward so that we may become more aware of your grace and divine presence at work in the world. Help us remember for every phyiscal challenge there is a spiritual reality that has eternal consequences. Help our souls to run the good race and reach our eternal reward of living in your Divine presence always.

3.2 Million Somalis Need Life-Saving Help !

NAIROBI, Kenya The drought and famine in Somalia have killed more than 29,000 children under the age of 5, according to U.S. estimates.

The United Nations has said previously that tens of thousands of people have died in the drought, the worst in Somalia in 60 years. The U.N. says 640,000 Somali children are acutely malnourished.

Nancy Lindborg, an official with the U.S. government aid arm, told a congressional committee in Washington recently that the U.S. estimates that more than 29,000 children under the age of 5 have died in the last 90 days in southern Somalia. The U.N. declared three new regions in Somalia famine zones, bringing the total number to five. Out of a population of roughly 7.5 million, the U.N. says 3.2 million Somalis are in need of immediate lifesaving assistance.

800,000 children urgently need your prayer and help. Tens of thousands of Somalia's famine refugees have fled to camps in Ethiopia, Kenya and Mogadishu in search of food. Pray the food and help they need will be there for them.

Lord, we are asking for a Eucharistic miracle to help your hungry children. Inspire all nations to become bread for the less fortunate. Lord, help us to feed the hungry, comfort the dying and minister to all those involved in this crisis for we see you in our midst in the poor, the hungry and the dying.

Lord, help us to lessen the burden of those suffering from the life-threatening drought in Somalia and other countries. They are our neighbors, our friends and our children for we all are made in your image and likeness. Hear our urgent prayers for mercy.
