The Dignity of All Workers 2012

Labor Day 2012 - On this Labor Day let us pray for the rights and justice for all who work
and the dignity and the success of all who
are seeking work.

Creator God of all blessing and goodness:

You made the heavens and the earth and you saw
your work as Good and worthy of our praise.
May we continue your good work through
our own labor helping to create your
kingdom on earth as in heaven.

We pray on this Labor Day for all those who work. Whether in school, factory, mines, the armed services, business offices, government jobs or on the farm or in our homes and mission fields - may all workers carry themselves with the dignity and honor their work deserves. May they receive respect as God's witnesses and kept safe from harm, and be well paid for their hard work so that they might provide for their family and loved ones.

God help us to do good in all our endeavors and not exploit the work of others but bless all for the common good.

Lord, help us to create work according to your divine plan so that workers of all nations might mutually prosper with decent wages for decent work.

Lord, we also pray for those who are unemployed
or underemployed. May they not become
discouraged; may they continue to find ways
to learn and grow in their time of need. Help us as a nation to provide for those who are suffering from unemployment so that they do not lose heart or their homes. May those out of work experience tangible evidence of our support. May meaningful work come quickly to those in most need.

May all the labors of our lives benefit your
kingdom so that we might be your united children of your world filled with peace and blessings for all. AMEN

Fr Robert and all Nursing Home Patients

Dade City, FL - Father Robert is like many of our aging population, who are suffering from early signs of dementia. He was recently placed in a nursing home and hopes to get well enough to return to his home at Saint Leo's monastery.

Like many nursing home patients, Fr Robert takes one day at a time. Measuring his quality of life often depends on how many names he can remember or if he knows what day it is. He is fortunate for he has visitors daily and often gives them blessings when they leave.

But there are many elderly in our society who are not so lucky. Many sit and stare not knowing where they are.

This has left us wondering if God has a nursing home for our souls? Do we get sent there when we forget God and our faith in Him? I dont think so! God never forgets his loved ones, especially His lost sheep!

Lord, help us remember the souls of all our loved ones, family and friends and the quality of life of our priests and religious as they face health challenges. They are all very important to us and continue to serve us well through their prayers and intercession.

Lord, help us provide quailty care and companionship for the elderly. May You be their holy sanctuary as they strive to face the trials of this life. Help us to love them and care for them as if we were caring for You.

Lord, nurse our society back to health so no one is ever neglected, abused or ignored, whatever their age or circumstance.

Lord, help us remember that one of our greatest blessings is the wisdom and counsel of our elders; for as we treat others so shall we be treated. Help us remember that as our bodies age, our spirits get stronger and our souls become like diamonds of your love. Lord, help us appreciate all those you have placed in our care as your precious children. Help us to serve them with a sacrificial love that only your grace can provide.

Remember, the abandoned, the lonely and the neglected as they share in your cross; may they receive their just reward in this life and the next. Amen

Bishop Ma Daqin and all Catholic Students

BEIJING - Catholic news services have reported the delay of classes at Sheshan Seminary, saying the school was informed by a notice from Shanghai's aging Bishop Jin Luxian, who last month appointed Ma Daqin as his successor. It said classes have also been delayed at Shanghai's affiliated Tailaiqiao Seminary. The two institutions train would-be priests from Shanghai and five surrounding provinces, making them important to the church's viability in China.

The move follows an investigation into Ma's surprise announcement shortly after his ordination that he was resigning from the party's Chinese Catholic Patriotic Association, which exerts strict control over the Chinese church. Ma has been confined to the Sheshan Seminary ever since his announcement.

Bishop Daqin's announcement, made to the loud applause of parishioners, was seen as a challenge to the Communist Party from one of China's largest, wealthiest and most independent dioceses that has long sought to throw off state control.

It marked the biggest public challenge to Beijing's control over the Catholic clergy in years. The Vatican does not recognize the Catholic Patriotic Association and says the Chinese church should take its orders directly from Rome.

Ma, who has been confined since the announcement, has been unable to carry out the duties of his new office. Such harsh treatment could prompt more Catholic clergy and laymen to turn to the underground church that operates alongside the open church in most areas in defiance of government control.

Lord, we pray for all Catholics suffering from religious persecution from Syria, to China and as far south as the Sudan. Grant them your protection, intervention and deliverance as they seek to do your will.

Grant all peoples and nations their right to religious freedom so your perfect will may be done now and for all generations to come. Amen

David Augusta III, Age 17, and Susan LeBlanc, Age 41

HAMPSTEAD - One vehicle may have crossed the center line before a weekend crash on Route 111 that put two people in a Boston hospital with serious injuries.

Police received a witness report that a Jeep Cherokee driven by David Augusta III, 17, of Sandown crossed the center line, Lt. John Frazier said.

We believe that may have been one of the contributing factors, he said.

Augusta is in critical condition at Massachusetts General Hospital.

Susan Leblanc, 41, of Plaistow, the driver of a Chrysler minivan involved in the crash near Hazel Drive, is in serious condition at the hospital.

Passengers in the minivan included her husband, John, 41, and their sons, Evan, 8, and Ryan, 5.

They were treated for minor injuries.

Frazier said police are still conducting interviews in their investigation.

It does not appear that speed or alcohol were factors in the crash, Frazier said.

A state police accident reconstruction team also was involved in the investigation.

Augusta attends Timberlane Regional High School, where he is a senior. He is the son of Lawrence police Officer David Augusta Jr.

He is a nice boy, Timberlane principal Don Woodworth said.

The family has been in touch with the school, requesting David be kept in their prayers, Woodworth said.

Jeremy P. Shawaf, Age 23, Venice, CA

Venice, California - A 23-year-old Venice, Calif., man was in critical condition Monday after being ejected from his vehicle during a traffic accident Sunday night in Southern Humboldt County.

Jeremy Patrick Shawaf was at Santa Rosa Memorial Hospital on Monday, after being transferred from Redwood Memorial Hospital in Fortuna, according to the California Highway Patrol. Representatives at Santa Rosa Memorial Hospital said he was in critical condition Monday afternoon.

Shawaf was driving alone Sunday at 9:30 p.m. traveling northbound on U.S. Highway 101 north of the Mendocino County line in Southern Humboldt County when the accident took place, according to the CHP. While negotiating a left curve in the roadway, Shawaf apparently lost control of his 2000 Toyota 4Runner, and the vehicle went off the east roadway edge. Shawaf is thought to have overcorrected, causing the vehicle to reenter the traffic lanes where it overturned several times, coming to rest on the southbound shoulder. He was subsequently ejected from the vehicle.

The CHP said Shawaf was wearing his seatbelt at the time of the accident. Alcohol is not believed to be a factor. The CHP Garberville office is investigating the incident.

Lord, we pray for all travelers for their protection, healing and safety during their journey. May your guardian angels keep them safe until they reach their destination. We entrust our lives and our safety to your providential care. Amen

Eternal Rest for Pamela Kaner, Age 59, Brewster, New York

CARMEL, N.Y. - Boaters rescued a 6-year-old girl from a small reservoir north of New York City late Monday afternoon after finding her clinging to the floating corpse of a family friend who had taken her to Lake Glenelda to cool off.

Investigators were still trying to piece together exactly what happened to the child and her caregiver, identified by authorities as Pamela Kaner, 59, of Brewster.

Swimming in the lake is prohibited. The girl told police that Kaner brought her into the water and was holding her before something went wrong.

An autopsy is planned to see if Kaner then drowned, or suffered some other medical emergency.

A group of people in a rowboat heard the girl crying for help at around 5 p.m. and found her holding on to Kaner's body, floating some distance from shore, Carmel Police Chief Michael Johnson said. The lake is about 730 yards across at its widest point -- about 7 times the length of a football field.

The boaters pulled the girl from the water and brought her to shore. She was treated at a hospital, but was not seriously harmed. Kaner's body was retrieved by firefighters, who paddled out in a commandeered boat.

Lord, eternal rest grant unto Pamela and all our deceased loved ones. May your healing hand be upon her family and friends, especially the six year old child who accompanied her. May the child Jesus heal her physically and emotionally as she recovers. Amen

Suffern Middle School Student Gun Shot Victim

Suffern, New York - The Suffern Middle School student, a church altar boy, was found shot behind the Sterlington Station Restaurant and Deli at 23 Seven Lakes Drive. The shooting occurred before 7 p.m. Thursday, possibly in the middle of Allen Lane, just feet from the deli.

Ramapo Detective Lt. Mark Emma said this morning that detectives still were investigating. Police declined comment on the owner of the handgun or how the boy came in possession of the weapon.

The teenager is being treated at Good Samaritan Hospital in Suffern. Hes still alive but is in critical condition, Emma said. Right now, were looking at this as an attempted suicide. Were working on what exactly happened and want to confirm there was no foul play.

On Thursday night, one official said an off-duty officer with the New York City Department of Environmental Protection was among the first on the scene and performed CPR on the victim. The boy, whose identity was not released, had a pulse when he was taken from the scene.

Lord, your promised to be with us during our most critical hours. Please be with all our students preparing to go back to school. Keep them safe and in your care. Nurture them and guide them with your infinite wisdom and grace. May your mercy reign in their hearts and your abundant blessings be upon them and their loved ones. Amen
